  • About Raku Cooking Technique

Raku is a traditional pottery firing technique originating in 16th-century Japan. Meaning "joy" in Japanese, Raku is a special method where control and chance work together, yielding unique and original results with each firing.

In this technique, ceramics are fired in special Raku kilns used outdoors at temperatures of approximately 950–1050 °C. While still incandescent, the ceramics are quickly removed from the kiln using long tongs and placed in containers filled with combustible organic materials such as sawdust and dried leaves, and then covered.

The intense reduction environment created at this stage produces powerful and unpredictable effects on the surfaces of both the ceramic clay and the glazes. Glazed surfaces exhibit metallic reflections, varying color transitions, and unique textures, while unglazed surfaces can turn a matte, deep black due to the effect of carbon.

Sudden removal of the ceramic from a very high temperature creates a strong thermal shock. This causes the formation of fine hairline cracks on the glaze surface. The carbon released during reduction penetrates these cracks, creating characteristic black lines and unique patterns.

After the firing and reduction process is complete, the ceramics are cooled, cleaned with water, and carefully removed to remove soot, ash, and other residues from their surfaces.

The most distinctive feature of Raku is that the process cannot be completely controlled. The interaction between fire, smoke, glaze, ceramic surface, and atmosphere produces different results in each piece. Therefore, every piece produced using the Raku technique is unique and carries colors, textures, and surface effects that cannot be replicated exactly.
